Lincoln’s Birthplace National Park is a place that we went nearly every year for a field trip when I was in school. My grandfather’s farm included adjacent property to the park. After years of saying we needed to visit, Thing One, Thing Two, and DH had their first visit. Mom, Dad, and I had our umpteeth visit!
Unfortunately, all the walking trails are closed since no one has seen fit to pick up the tree limbs that fell during last winter’s ice storm. That left us the visitor’s center, the log cabin, and the sinking spring. With two five-year-olds along, it was a quick trip!
Despite growing up about 45 minutes from Churchill Downs, I’ve never actually been to the Kentucky Derby. We now live about five minutes from Keeneland and try to get out there at least once a meet.
Some good friends invited us to join them in a box at Churchill Downs for a Saturday at the races. We were the first box in the row, right next to a large, shared patio. We also got to go down in the paddock and right up to the winner’s circle. Thing One and Thing Two had a great time playing with their children, also twins, and all the grown-ups enjoyed themselves as well.
It was upsetting to see how deserted the Downs actually was. This was a beautiful Saturday and it just seemed like there was no one there, a real contrast from Derby Day.
